The world standard for Food Safety was developed in order to specify the safety, quality and operational criteria required within a food-producing organisation if it is to satisfy the statutory obligations and those relating to consumer protection. The structure and the content of the Standard were designed in such a way that it is possible for a qualified third party – the certifying agency – to assess a company’s buildings and sites, operational systems and procedures against the criteria of the Standard.

The Standard does not apply to activities such as the wholesale trade, importing, distribution and storage which are beyond the direct control of the company. The BRC has developed a series of World Standards, which set out the criteria for a wide range of activities in the production, packaging and storage and distribution of foodstuffs.
